5 ‘Do-able’ tips to increase your social media interaction

A couple of days ago I was reading a blog post that claimed to be able to help you increase your social media presence. The only actual tip provided was more or less “buy followers” – as in, pay money for tweets, Facebook page likes, etc. This is a practice I have always seen as both unnecessary and shady. Not to mention it would only be a short term boost that offers nothing concrete due to the nature of social media.

What you need is genuine engagement, which can be difficult to achieve on the web now that everything is socially minded. Instead of flooding your profiles/pages with people, you should be working to improve your interactions with people genuinely interested in you or your brand. Think quality, not quantity; if you attract the right people, they will do more than having a hundred people on your list that will essentially ignore you.

There are many ways you can achieve this. But I try to narrow it down to a couple of things that I have found work for me.

1. Have interesting things to share

A lot of what you share will be reshares from people on your feed. This is a very effective way of increasing visibility, making connection, putting you in other people’s feeds and more. But if you are always sharing stuff that doesn’t have any impact, you won’t get very far. So do two things: cut down on the number of people in your feed by removing anyone who doesn’t provide anything interesting, then start adding people, lists or groups that offer more. This will give you a lot of great inbound content and help to boost your own shares/posts.

2. Start sharing your own work

The best tool at your disposal is your own content. Blog posts are a popular one for taking people to your third party site. But my favorite form is infographics, which are very easy to have people share and are likely to go viral. All while showing both your artistic ability and expertise on a topic! There are few ways as helpful for establishing yourself as an authority, as a good infographic. Also, don’t forget to make sure you have built a solid strategy of managing your social media accounts and channels so you can see the results of your work.

3. You can be controversial

You would never want to be needlessly aggressive or offensive. But being a bit provocative can be a great way to improve your social media presence. The downside is that you may alienate some users. But on the plus side, those people were probably not within your demographic to begin with. Allow yourself to get a bit controversial, and you will see your presence expand quickly.

4. Watch your headlines

All of your content should have a ‘to-the-point’, eye catching headline. If you fail with the headline you fail to establish a link with the audience immediately, they will just skip over it. Don’t believe me? Take a moment and think of all the content you tend to check out yourself on social media. What does it have in common? Probably the sensational nature of the headline, even when if it’s not entirely accurate.

5. Keep trying

Don’t get discouraged if it takes time for you to build a real social presence. Some people get lucky, and for whatever reason they strike the right notes at the right time. That won’t be everyone’s experience, though. Don’t be surprised if you have to work for it, and remain patient.
