Build your own website or blog in wordpress

March 31, 2010 British Library, London. Women Unlimited (using our Springmedia skills) are running another build your own website or blog  in WordPress workshop. We  will take you through the process of creating a website or blog using WordPress.  It is an incredibly flexible system that gives you the chance to manage and update your own website at will.  This is the 4th time we’ve run this workshop and you can see some of the fantastic sites that have been created by some of our previous delegates below.

Why should you want a content management system?

It puts you in control.  It gives you a lot of flexibility and the opportunity to edit your own site, add your own images and create a professional looking site that many pay thousands to have others create for them.

WordPress is a (free!) blogging platform that is used by people all over the world to manage their websites and blogs – and also the platform that Women Unlimited is built on! This is the third time we’ve run this workshop now so now we can show you some of the fantastic sites that our previous delegates have created.  These are website that any new business would be proud of.  A lot of work has gone into these websites but it has really paid off!

We will do all the pre-preparation for you, set up your database, and upload wordpress to your webspace. So when you come along on the day you are able to get right into the fun bit of building your website.

Keeping it simple for you

We specialise in making technology simple and will be on hand through the whole day to show you and assist you. This is a practical course in the extreme in that at the end of the 6 hours you will have the foundations for a website that you can be proud of.  Your website will look professional, will be easy to update (as WordPress will be your content management system), and will be Google friendly! What more could you ask for?!

Specific agenda items

  • How to add templates to your site
  • Choosing and applying your design
  • How to customise your design
  • How to add pages to your site
  • Creating your navigation so that it makes sense
  • How to add and remove elements from your site
  • How to add functionality to your site (ie Twitter, Google sitemap – don’t worry, we’ll give you a few of our favourites and show you where to find the rest)
  • Where to find more information

How will it work?

You will bring your own laptop to the workshop, we will not be providing computers – only our own for demonstration purposes. We will provide you with all the software that you need and the templates that you will be using. For the purposes of this workshop, you will need to use the templates that we have provided as they have been chosen for their quality and suitability for business sites. However, we will direct you to other sites where you can choose from thousands of other designs (most of them free!)

What you will need to have in place

All of these things listed are necessary, but we are happy to talk you through the requirements and how to get them on a one to one basis with each person who books on the course.

Hosting: A wordpress website requires Linux hosting with MySQL database – typically this costs £5 per month. We can provide you with a temporary hosting package for £25 (including transfer to your chosen host after the workshop) or an annual hosting package of £50. Alternatively, please feel free to use your own hosting company, just make sure you have the database capability.

Laptop: You will need to bring your own laptop with a wireless connection.  We highly recommend that you bring a laptop that you are familiar with working with as it can be difficult if you are trying to build a website when you don’t know how your computer works properly

Domain: Not explicitly necessary to build the website, but your site can’t go live without a name. We can also go through how to connect your domain to your hosting company, set up your emails etc – we recommend reg123 or UKreg for domain purchasing. Never let your web developer buy your domain as you are likely to pay over the market rate and this will become one of your most important assets and you want to make sure you own it completely.

Images: As part of the workshop we will show you were to find images, but will not be able to spend a lot of time on this. If you would like to have specific images on your site, we recommend you purchase or source them in advance. Best site for this is

Content: Ideally you will have your own content to add to the site. But don’t let it stop you if you don’t – we can put in holding pages for the content you don’t have and using the magic of the WordPress CMS you can change it at any time

But don’t take our word for it! This is what some of our previous delegates have said…

“I attended the ‘Build Your Own Website In Word Press’ workshop a couple of weeks ago, and apart from a few minor problems which were easily overcome I now have a fully functioning, totally fantastic Word Press website! I love it, it’s easy to use and have really enjoyed putting it together. I really wanted to take control of my website, because things change sometimes daily and it was important for me to be in front of the curve as far as new developments are concerned. Julie has been absolutely brilliant (and very patient) in helping me to do this – I do find technology challenging, but I decided to take up the challenge and it’s absolutely fantastic to actually get a result for a change. I definitely recommend everyone to come on this course, it’s money very well spent.

Thanks again, and now looking to upload some audio having just worked out how to use Audacity to record an MP3 – there’s no stopping me now!” Wendy Dashwood Quick written on June 15 after attending the previous workshop on June 4.

  1. I ahve built a number of blogs myself, all using WordPress and a whole lot of useful plugins. I have to say that it is the easiest way to get your experiences and community online. There are so many themes available and lots of video tuition, so there is really no excuse for not becoming a member of the woman’s blogging community.

  2. I am looking for a WordPress workshop but it seems as though I have just missed this one! Will you be holding anymore in the coming months and are they all in London?

    Thanks in advance. 🙂

  3. WordPress blogs are fantastic as grabbing free traffic. We started my online website with a WordPress blog where we just initially posted pictures for lover of Noa Noa clothing
