Last night I had the pleasure of being a judge for the Host of Ideas Female Founders event. Host of Ideas is an online platform that creates connections between accredited private investors and startup and growth businesses that need funding. There were over 80 entries and from there, the Host of Ideas team had the difficult job of shortlisting just 5 finalists. And what fantastic finalists they were! We had three judges on the panel… myself, Judith Moreton a Dealmaker from UKTI and a very successful entrepreneur in her own ... Read More »

Feed SubscriptionFrom human rights to entrepreneur: 9 lessons I’ve learnt
I was a human rights worker for a few years. My first book came out and I quit my job; I didn’t want to travel any more and I wanted to combine my love of writing with my passion for new media. And thus, my life as author and freelance writer was born. I’d been freelancing for seven years before I decided to quit and launch Ready Writer, a web-based copy-writing company, specialising in web content (SEO, blog/article writing and electronic publishing) for small-medium sized companies looking to maximise their ... Welcome to our second instalment of the UK’s richest ladies, if you missed the first, you can find it here. The likes of Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and the Google guys are well publicised. And while the figures suggest it’s still very much a man’s world when it comes to billionaires (the top 10 richest people in the world are all men), the world’s richest women also receive their fair share of press attention. But what about the ladies who made their way onto the rich list not through inheritance, ... Read More »

Your Stories: Redefining Me: Following through on my dreams
7am Monday morning and my alarm goes off yet again, the fourth time since I pressed the snooze button thirty minutes ago. Finally I drag myself out of bed and dash into the shower. I have just under an hour to get dressed, made up, run out the door and get to the train station in time to catch the 9 o’clock train. Dressed to the nines in my designer suits, hand bags and stiletto heels, I was always Read More »
Celebrate 100 years of International Women’s Day as a woman and entrepreneur
Today we celebrate the centenary of International Women’s Day. It’s amazing to think that 100 years ago we were fighting to be heard. To have the right to education. To have the right to have a voice. To have the right to vote. I can’t imagine a time when an organisation like Women Unlimited wasn’t able to exist and am grateful to all the women who have come before us and forged a path for all of us today. I was born in the sixties, at a time where women ... Read More »

Natalie Ellis – inventor of Road Refresher
There is one item that President Obama doesn’t leave home without when taking his dog, Bo, on a trip. That item is the Road Refresher, which was famously rejected by the panel on Dragon’s Den in 2008 as they felt it was too challenging to crack the American market. But Natalie Ellis, undaunted by their brutal criticism and her desire to succeed, forged ahead and has become a bonafide entrepreneur with a £1 million turnover. Read More »

Karen Darby – Extraordinary Entrepreneur
“My friends think I’m lazy, but I just work efficiently!” laughs Karen Darby, the gregarious, fun-loving founder of SimplySwitch. Karen is one of those inspirational entrepreneurs who accidentally stumbled across her chosen career and has been making everything she touches a success ever since. Like a lot of entrepreneurs, Karen’s entrepreneurial spirit was evident early on. She left school with one O-level and landed a job in telesales for a local newspaper, making 50p on every £5 advertisement she sold, or as she explains it “enough for a packet of ... Read More »
