Product is King: A man in a mum’s world

I’m writing articles as a diary of ideas and experiences that happen to me as I grow my business, The Band Project, within the Mumpreneur and WAHM/SAHM communities.

My hope is that as I find my way through my problems I can share the strategies and approaches that worked for me to help you develop and succeed with your business.

Marketing = Product

This is the theory of Tom Ford – fashion designer, film director, model and one of my biggest inspirations in both business and style – it is a known fact that I am a little bit of a tart!

To be honest this idea was a challenge at first – it reads like an Algebra equation where it seems to make no sense… But then I started to think about it – let’s not forget Tom Ford has his product stocked in Harrods, his suits are good enough for James Bond to wear, he turned around Gucci, worked with Estee Lauder and is one of the Fashion glitterati and a brand in his own right. I figured he couldn’t have done all of that and not have a business mentality worth exploring.

Does that mean a product or service will market itself?

Well yes, in a way, and interestingly as I explored it as an idea I found it brings a real sense of integrity to my business. The focus starts on the product then moves on to sales. This might sound obvious or simplistic but in my experience businesses are so bottom line orientated that sometimes the standard of product is often lacking. Repeat business, a reputation and word of mouth are, in my opinion, only going to grow if your product is consistently of a high standard.

No amount of marketing or PR and advertising will bring about the results you want unless your product is 100% there. If you can’t speak about it with a level of belief and conviction, backed up with facts, videos, photos, samples, testimonials, to best demonstrate what it is you do or sell, I believe no one else will buy into it either.

Creating The Band Project product has been a longer process than I ever thought it would be: The Band Project is a Live Performance and Band orientated music course for kids aged 8 – 16 with afresh, energetic and proven approach to getting kids playing and performing in bands, listening to new music, playing music they love, meeting new people and building their self confidence through music.  I had to find a balance of an atmosphere my students enjoy and can flourish in, yet make it educational enough for their parents to feel it’s worth paying for, It had to be the right price to be affordable but also to turn a profit and to demonstrate the value of what we do.

Conviction

I suddenly realised that over the last 2 years I have been fine tuning and exploring every aspect of my business and adapting it, and tweaking it and only after that length of time do I now feel 100% confident in what and how we do what we do. I don’t believe it’s a coincidence that the business is moving forward in leaps and bounds now that I have this belief and knowledge.

I recently joined a great local Mumpreneur Networking group. I attended one meeting in Brighton with 30 energetic, lively Mum’s offering everything from Life Coaching, Style advice, photography, including Boudoir shots (which they seemed terribly keen for me to take up!) The women whose products I remember are those whose confidence shone through. Those who didn’t stay in the safe circle of Mums (and me), but stepped into the middle and turned the café of a high end Gym into their platform, are the ones I remember. The conviction that they had for what they do and their personalities shining through, those are the Mum’s who I expect to have the strongest products and services you’ll want to keep re-booking and the ones you’ll tell your friends about.

Product is King.

What I’ve discovered is, above all else, your product is King. The confidence you find when you know this, when no matter where you are or who you are talking to, you talk with such a deep level of conviction that what you do is better than the next person, that your product or service is worth the money you’re charging brings with it an amazing positive effect where your business moves faster, getting results you hadn’t thought were possible. Isn’t that really what we all want?
