We all know images are important and make a website/blog post so much more interesting. It can be more time-consuming to find the right images. But if we look at websites and ask clients why they like them, it’s usually the use of beautiful images. Why settle for less? I wanted to ensure you don’t make these mistakes with your website images – here we go:
1. Cheesy images
Images are so important and there are so many directions you can go with choosing images for your site. You could go for literal images or more branded images that follow a specific theme. It’s hard to define what “cheesy” means, as some people just like those images. But an image should be chosen carefully and if you have a website designer who is truly up to speed with design trends and what works for a business, it helps to take their advice! 2. Unlicensed images or fonts
A lot of people are tempted to go online and just grab whatever images they find on Google for use on their website. This is a mistake, and it’s illegal. We recommend using online image libraries like istockphoto, shutterstock, dreamstime or others, and to choose images from them. Try them out within the website design, even with the watermark, to make sure that image fits within the section. Then if you are happy with it you can purchase the rights to use that image within that context on your site.
3. Incorrectly resized images
This is something we have seen several times on websites, in email newsletters and on blogs. It’s especially common in Content Managed websites or directory sites, where people who don’t have the software to resize images, upload their images and they get squished in. The quality looks bad, and the images usually load painfully slowly. It’s always better to resize the images first, using Photoshop or a proper image editing tool, or ask your website designer to help you with this.
4. Poor quality affiliate/partner logos
It’s definitely a good idea to include logos of the companies you are affiliated with or partners with. The visual effect of a row of logos does add credibility, even if the logos aren’t of recognisable companies. But too often people just take these logos off the company’s websites, and they vary in size and quality. When stuck together on a page, they end up looking messy and inconsistent. This part of the site, like all other parts, should be designed properly and planned out so that the logos fit neatly together. It’s also a nice tough if each logo links to the website of the company it represents, and these pages should open in a new window.
5. Inconsistent staff profile pictures
It’s a great idea to have pictures of the staff, but these should be planned out so that they look good together on the page. So, not one of someone on holiday and another one of someone standing in front of the water cooler at the office – a set of consistent images – even if you want to do something quirky like each person holding a favourite object, should be done in a consistent and professional way.
